	Bloomsbury Publishing plc is best known as the publisher of the Harry Potter series. In 2008 the company decided to diversify into academic publishing and Frances Pinter was invited to establish the new imprint, Bloomsbury Academic – concentrating on humanities and social sciences.

In just under three years Frances made two major acquisitions resulting in a backlist of over 1200 titles, won the bid to digitise and publish online the Winston Churchill Archive, and initiated a publishing relationship with the UK’s National Archive.

Bloomsbury Academic was born digital, and with a new business model. Original research-led publications are published free online on a Creative Commons Non-Commercial licence with print and e-books available for sale.

In this way first class research findings are made available to scholars all over the world without pay barriers.
